Energy Mapping and Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of Access to Electricity in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral

Challenge

Remote communities in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral faced persistent energy access gaps, with limited consolidated data on existing micro-hydro and solar systems. Reliable information was needed to assess energy demand, identify supply gaps, understand the socio-economic impact on micro-hydro and solar beneficiaries, and ensure broad geographical coverage in the region.

Approach

Reenergia Impact conducted a comprehensive mapping of micro-hydro and solar systems across more than 50 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. The assignment included energy demand assessment surveys, socio-economic impact analysis for beneficiaries, community engagement, discussions with social organizations, and active data collection. Meanwhile, trail checking, spot verification, and comprehensive data validation techniques were used to strengthen accuracy and ensure coverage across remote and hard-to-reach locations.

Outcome

The assignment generated a detailed evidence base on energy demand, system coverage, and the socio-economic impact of electricity access. It helped achieve broad geographical coverage from the Siachen Glacier area to the Kargil border and Wakhan border strip, while generating evidence to support renewable energy planning and improved understanding of electricity access impacts in remote mountain communities.
