Food Security and Trade Facilitation in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) Region

Challenge

Regional food security and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) competitiveness in the NENA region are affected by regulatory and procedural barriers across targeted agricultural trade flows. In particular, these trade obstacles are present in the following trade flows: Jordan-Saudi Arabia livestock exports, Egypt-UAE vegetable and fruit exports, and UAE-Oman cereal re-exports. There was a need to improve trade efficiency, strengthen SME competitiveness, and support regional food security.

Approach

Reenergia Impact supported stakeholder mapping, questionnaire development, focus group discussions, and technical analysis for selected trade flows under an initiative implemented by International Trade Centre (ITC) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The work included the development and validation of questionnaires for designated trade flows, preparation of reports on identified trade barriers, and engagement with private sector participants to gather evidence on key trade obstacles.

Outcome

The assignment contributed to a clearer understanding of trade obstacles across selected food and agricultural flows. It supported recommendations to improve regional trade efficiency, strengthen SME competitiveness, and advance food security objectives across targeted countries.
